Have you ever wondered what makes the difference between one person and another? Why some people are successful and famous while others live a normal life. The reason for this may come from many sides, but the main reason is probably that the goals of each person are different. The clearer a person’s goals, the faster they achieve what they want. You can start setting goals in your own learning. What score do you want to achieve in the final exam? What accomplishments do you want to achieve in your studies? Let’s learn about The Power of Goal Setting in Education with Savvycle tutors in this blog post! Do not miss it!
WHAT IS SETTING GOALS?
Well, let’s come and distinguish between these two words: “goal” and “ target’’. Sometimes you may find these two words used in similar contexts, but don’t be mistaken! They have completely different meanings. A goal can be defined as the primary ambition that people cherish time and again to achieve. As human beings, we all have goals in life. These can be in our personal life or else in our professional life. While a goal remains as an individual’s ultimate achievement, targets are what drive the individual towards his goal.
For example, to achieve the goal of ‘getting an A in the final exam’, you need to set targets such as: ‘Enhancing knowledge’, ‘Practicing more exam questions’, ‘Solving difficult exercises. Likewise, targets assist the student to slowly make his way towards his goal.
WHY DO PEOPLE NEED TO SET GOALS IN EDUCATION?
Tony Robbins has said, “Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into visible.” Indeed, this opinion holds great value as setting goals is the method by which you turn your dreams into action. In life, to achieve any accomplishment, you should set specific goals for yourself. Examples include graduating with honors, studying abroad, or achieving an IELTS score of 8.0. These goals will help you find your way out of the darkness and into the light. Goals provide guidance and methods for you to achieve what you want.
With clear and smart goals, you not only determine the direction to reach your destination and the motivation to propel yourself throughout the journey, but also reap significant benefits. Goals help you recognize what deserves priority, making it easier to control your life. They also enhance your ability to focus on learning and manage time effectively. Setting goals creates opportunities to assess your capabilities and monitor your own progress, thereby honing your skills to achieve many of your future objectives.
HOW TO SET GOALS IN EDUCATION?
Well, after recognising the benefits of setting goals in education with Savvycle, our question now is : “How to set goals in education?” Start right now! Choose a suitable goal for yourself and create a plan to achieve it with the following 6 steps suggested by our tutors.
DEFINE SPECIFIC GOALS FOR YOURSELF
To gain a comprehensive perspective and specific solutions, start by defining specific goals for yourself. Identify your educational goals using the following five questions:
- What type of student do you want to be when you graduate? Excellent, good, or average?
- Which competitions do you want to participate in to improve your performance? What prize level are you aiming for?
- In which subject do you recognize your strength?
- In which subject lies your weakness?
- Do you want to study abroad or in your home country?
Otherwise, you can try the “3 goals method”. In about 30 seconds, quickly write down the 3 most important goals of your education. Whatever your answers are with this “instant noodle” listing approach, they might accurately depict what you truly desire.
PLAN SPECIFIC GOALS: SHORT TERM & LONG TERM
Just as an artist must choose a subject and sketch an overall layout before painting in detail, setting goals for your studies is similar. The overall layout will be your long-term plan, while the details will be your short-term plan. Long-term goals help you define the journey ahead and provide significant motivation. For example, your long-term goal might be to become a doctor after graduation, working at a renowned private hospital in the city with a high salary.
Short-term goals help you delve into the small steps needed to achieve this grand objective. Short-term goals should be organized from a daily to-do list, progressing to goals you are determined to accomplish each week/month. Gradually increase to one-year goals, medium-term goals for 2-3 years, and long-term goals for 3-5 years.
DEFINE STEPS TO ACHIEVE THE GOALS
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, and to achieve success, one must start with the first steps. Therefore, to make your goals more feasible, you need to create a list of all the tasks to be done and arrange them in two ways: Order and Priority. Order – what you need to do first in order to do other tasks. Priority – what is more important and what is less important.
To prepare for an upcoming exam, suppose you set a goal to score an ‘A’ in Mathematics. The steps you would need to take include reviewing past exam papers to identify the likely scope of the syllabus, revising the course material, practicing similar exam questions, learning effective problem-solving methods, and so on.
DEFINE DIFFICULTIES TO ACHIEVE THE GOALS
Setting specific steps will help you identify the obstacles that need to be overcome. To achieve any form of success, one must go through difficulties. This is an inevitable law of life. By identifying these difficulties, you will know what needs to be improved to make yourself better every day. Additionally, you will maintain and enhance your strengths.
Recognizing potential challenges helps you be less surprised and better prepared when sudden obstacles appear and hinder your path to success. You won’t lose motivation to achieve your educational goals because you know you will have to face these difficulties to succeed. Therefore, identifying challenges to prepare for unexpected situations is extremely important.
The key to optimizing the time taken to achieve goals is to practice self-discipline daily. This means, once you have decided on your most important task to study, you need to avoid all distractions and focus your entire mind on it until it is 100% complete.
From the beginning, you should set specific deadlines, with exact dates and years for each task. If your goal is quite large, set smaller interim deadlines. However, it’s crucial to complete these tasks on or before the set deadline. This allows you to easily monitor your progress and identify areas where you need to put in more effort in the future.
STANDARDIZE THE GOALS
While enjoying your achieved milestones, you should also reassess the extent of your accomplishments and consider whether the goals set are truly what you desire. If you found a goal too easy to achieve, consider increasing the difficulty for the next one. If you achieved a goal but found it extremely challenging, review your work process and consider setting a more manageable goal next time. If some goals no longer seem interesting or relevant, consider replacing them with new ones.
PEOPLE WITHOUT GOALS
It’s unfortunate that many people are living without a purpose, or in other words, they are merely existing in this world. They are like sheep, lining up and doing what others do. As a result, their actions are easily predictable, and they are too afraid to take risks. This is not something you should desire or pursue. Once you find your life’s purpose, be aware of the significance of your actions. Because if you don’t know why you are doing something, you might be aimless like many others.
If you tend to not stick to the plans in your life goal, write them down on paper and place it somewhere visible as a reminder of why you need to act. Additionally, set appropriate limits for yourself. You can’t be everywhere and do everything you want. Instead of having countless purposes, choose the most important and necessary ones to focus on.
In summary, it can be said that to achieve personal goals, it’s crucial to have a feasible plan, the more specific, the better. Particularly for young people, regardless of age, it’s important to nurture a goal within themselves to create motivation to strive every day. Ideally, decide precisely what you want, write it down, plan it out, and work on it daily. By doing this, you will accomplish many more goals in the coming weeks and months.
